Spear Grass House

Speargrass Flat, Queenstown. 2019

This is a house with two approaches. One would be best for guests to arrive and the other a quick exist to grab groceries.
It felt very natural the we would connect these and allow a drive through configuration for the home.
The house again responded directly to the landscape and views to create its own form.
Placing its back to the cold winds wiping up from Lake Hayes to the south and opening up to the north to capture the Crown Range and Coronet Peak.

Timeless materials of zinc and contrasted with dark joinery and light stained timber.
The shapes of the outside create motifs for the inside, reflected in the stair, fire and kitchen particularly.

This is a modern and contemporary architectural home that has taken queues from its setting and surroundings.
It has an air to water underfloor heating system with back up of a wood fire. Just in case. The main heating is via the passive solar design with insulated concrete mass to the interior and well insulated exterior envelope.
